About Us

The specialty of Emergency Medicine is new world wide. Only when the medical community realized its importance 35 years ago, its existence as a specialized health care service started evolving. United States of America followed by Canada and Australia were the leading nations. This is after it was statistically evident that Emergency Medicine as a specialty, by early recognition, intervention and prevention of complication, reduces morbidity and mortality when a patient presents with acute medical illness and/or injury. The life and cost saving associated with the provision of specialized emergency care is remarkable for any nation.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is the first country to follow in the Middle East and Arab world. Like any other developed nations, the specialty of Emergency Medicine started as a strategy by major healthcare providers in the Kingdom. It was implemented initially by providing scholarships for post graduate specialty training in the US and Canada. Upon the return of the first graduated batches, the need to
further augment the specialty with a local board certification and residency training program was evident. Today, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has one of the leading training programs in the specialty of Emergency Medicine in the GCC, Arab world, and the Middle East.

Equivalent to other developed nations, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia needed a national body to take the lead in setting the standards for the specialty for the nation. Equivalent to the American College of Emergency Physicians, the Canadian Association of Emergency Physician, and others national bodies, the Saudi Society of Emergency Medicine (SASEM) is developed to be the national body that will take the lead in promoting and delivering the highest quality of emergency care and be
the leading advocate for emergency physicians, their patients, and the public.
